Description
Pastor, Why Pray? is not another book teaching you about the techniques of prayer instead it’s a spiritually charged and practical guide that emphasizes the critical importance of prayer in the life of a pastor.
Prayer is not optional for a pastor or any serious believer. It’s the engine room of habitat of a spiritual life, growth, effectiveness, and survival.
Drawing from scripture and experience, this book offer a compelling case why prayer should be the core of every pastor’s ministry and daily work with God.
Without prayer a pastor is weak, vulnerable, and directionless. With prayer they carry power, vision, authority, and grace to fulfill God’s purpose regardless of opposition.
A Short Glance Into Pastor, Why Pray?
“In the morning, as they were passing by, the disciples saw that the fig tree had withered away from the roots up. And remembering, Peter said to Him, “Rabbi (Master), look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered!” Jesus replied, “Have faith in God [constantly]. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and DOES NOT DOUBT IN HIS HEART [IN GOD’S UNLIMITED POWER], but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him [in accordance with God’s will].[Matt 17:20; Luke 17:6; 1 John 5:14] For this reason I am telling you, whatever things you ask for in prayer [in accordance with God’s will], believe [with confident trust] that you have received them, and they will be given to you.”
Mark 11:20-24 AMP
I have experienced the powerful effect of prayer. I’ll share an experience that has never left me. It never stops blessing me.
I had a member who was a serious support and blessing to the ministry, especially financially. He had been with us for about four years at this point in the story I am about to share with you. However, his family was never in support of his association with us. In fact, at one point, he became a pastor of one of our thriving branches. He was learning the word of God, as well as flourishing in his business, which we were all happy for him about.
However, there were attempts to stop his continuous involvement with us. At one time, his mom visited our fellowship center to harass us and threaten us in hopes that we would cower and ask her son to stop coming. I specifically spoke to him about the situation and asked him what he would like to do, as we are not keeping anyone with us against their will. He told me clearly he would like to continue serving the Lord in our ministry.
However, Satan doesn’t relent. Before long, his parents came up with an innocently sinister plan to pull him out of the ministry once and for all. And it worked. At that time, I was so busy that I hadn’t paid attention to what was happening behind the scenes. In fact, my wife had just given birth to our first son, and that was what I was much involved in around this time frame.
You need to understand the dynamics of our ministry. It is built with a sense of family, with me being the father and leader of the ministry. We try our best to relate with each other as one big family in Christ Jesus. One significant factor is that we frown upon attitudes that suggest rebellion, disobedience, or a lack of submission. If I call for anyone, we have been taught in scriptures and even in morals to respond quickly. We see it as rude and “unacceptable” for a person to say, “I will not come” or “I’ll come when I feel like coming” or not even come at all for whatever reason that has not been duly spoken about.
So I invited this brother for a discussion. I was no longer seeing him at meetings he was supposed to have been present in. Whenever we tried to reach out to him, he would say, “Oh, I am so sorry. I was busy, or I got so involved at work that I didn’t realize time had passed so quickly.” Then he would assure me that he would come at such and such a time or day. We would expect him, and he would still not show up. It was as though he was ghosting us!
Days passed, weeks came and went, and we were now in months. We hadn’t been able to see this brother, whom on a regular day, we would see almost every other day. It was already seeming we had lost this brother. He had stopped picking up our calls; he had also relocated from his previous apartment. Whenever we used a strange number he didn’t have, he’d pick up. Upon realizing we were the ones calling, he would laugh and assure us that all was well, that life had just been busy, and then he would promise to come visit us on such and such a day. That’s how we had been relating with this brother for almost three months.
However, one day, it just occurred to me that we had done everything we could humanly do in communicating with this brother and our interest in seeing him, but it proved abortive. It then dawned on me that I had done everything else aside from praying about it. It definitely shocked me. It surprised me. How could I have let that happen? Then once again I thought to myself, “What use is prayer in this matter?”
Anyway, I decided to pray about it. I prayed fervently. I was really concerned about this brother. It was obvious, I thought to myself, that he had left our ministry. This was a typical behavior of those who leave the ministry. As I continued praying, I remembered all the good times we had spent together, all the nice things he had given to us, and most of all, his immense support of the work of ministry committed to my hands. I was emotionally invested in seeing him, if at least once more, just to know why he had left and see his face one more time.
Don’t forget, all these were the thoughts I had going through my mind as I kept praying in tongues, loud and clear. Suddenly, I heard myself declare in English, “BROTHER SO AND SO, COME BY THIS DAY OF NEXT WEEK, COME IN THE NAME OF JESUS!” and I kept declaring that, loudly, fiercely, more authoritatively. I started binding Satan and anything, both natural and supernatural, that would want to stop him from coming to see me.
As I continued praying, I once again heard myself say, “BROTHER SO AND SO, CALL ME YOURSELF TO TELL ME YOU ARE COMING ON THIS SPECIFIC DATE AS I HAVE DECLARED.” I guess I remembered I was to be as specific as possible.
I prayed for some more hours and then rounded up my prayer. It was not even up to thirty minutes from when I concluded my prayers that I saw this brother’s call come in on my phone. I picked up with a high spirit. We shared pleasantries as though we had had no issue, like how he would have regularly called to check up on me and the family.
He eventually got to the point, apologized again for ghosting us, and told me with his own mouth he was coming on such and such a day of the week, as I had just prayed and declared. I was shocked that after three months, this brother suddenly remembered to reach out, but what was more shocking was when he told me himself, without any push from me, that he would be coming on the specific day and week I had just prayed about.
Of course, he came eventually and the matter was concluded.
This among other reasons as you would learn from this books is why you must pray Dear pastor.
